Conservation catalysts: the academy as nature's agent, ed. by James N. Levitt. Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, 2014. 350p bibl index afp ISBN 9781558443013 pbk, $30.00.

The papers in this volume are based on presentations at three sessions sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy from 2011 to 2013.  Because of the quality of the presentations, attendees felt the presented ideas needed to be published.  Overall, the book identifies two major environmental issues people around the world faceā€”loss of biodiversity and the onset of climate change.  The editor and presenters believe that because of their knowledge and position in society, academics can act as catalysts with respect to these matters.  The book is organized into five sections of three to four essays each.  In the first three sections, contributors describe programmatic changes academics made in various parts of the US, Canada, Central and South America, and Africa.  Section 4 describes how lawyers and policy makers have changed conservation policies in Victoria (Canada), Australia, southern Chile, and Trinidad and Tobago.  The last section describes the role of the humanities in these efforts.  Chapters are illustrated by clear, precisely colored figures; photos; graphs; and, in many cases, maps.  Each chapter also contains its own bibliography of cited and important articles.  This work will appeal to an audience ranging from professional conservationists to interested laypeople.  The volume may be downloaded free at https://www.lincolninst.edu/pubs/2472_Conservation-Catalysts.
